Concerning Your Estate Planning Needs

Who should you name as your estate executor?

On Behalf of | Aug 23, 2022 | Estate Planning |

An estate executor is a person who’s going to care of all the administrative duties for your estate when you die. You have the power to name the person who you want to do this. You should think carefully about this so you make a decision that’s in the best interest of your heirs.

There are several things that you should think about when you’re deciding who’s going to be the executor of your estate

Who can handle the job duties?

The executor will have to find your assets and heirs, plus take care of tasks like filing your final tax returns and paying your creditors. They also have to handle probate if it’s required and they need to file the will with the court.

The person you choose should have the mental capabilities required to make the necessary tasks happen. Remember, this person will have to start the process shortly after you pass away, so they should be able to think clearly even if they’re emotional at the time.

Who won’t be self-serving?

The person you choose should be able to do what’s best for your heirs. Their own wishes shouldn’t ever come into the picture when they’re handling things for your estate. It might help them if you talk to them ahead of time about your wishes. This gives them a chance to ask questions or get clarification while you’re still around to discuss the plan.

Every aspect of your estate plan must be carefully handled. Working with someone who understands your goals and who can help you to get things set up in a legal manner is critical. The sooner you get this done, the better you’ll feel.
